Enrichment and Extension Opportunities at Brookfield State School
At Brookfield State School, we are dedicated to fostering the potential of all students, including those who are gifted, talented, high-achieving, or demonstrate exceptional abilities. In line with the Queensland Department of Education's K–12 Curriculum, Assessment, and Reporting Framework (CARF), we ensure that all students receive a curriculum that is tailored to their diverse needs through a whole-school approach to differentiated teaching and learning. We offer the full Australian Curriculum from Prep to Year 6. This includes opportunities for extension (providing deeper understanding) and enrichment (broadening the scope of learning) within each student's year-level curriculum. These opportunities are designed to engage students across three key dimensions of the Australian Curriculum: learning areas, general capabilities, and cross-curriculum priorities. At Brookfield State School, our experienced teachers are skilled in differentiating instruction and providing both enrichment and extension opportunities across these three dimensions.
In addition to high-quality in-class differentiation, we offer the following specialised experiences:
- STEM Scholars Program: suited to highly capable students Years 3-5 who are operating in the top ten percent of their year level cohort and have an interest in STEM.
- Brainwaves Programs: an enrichment and extension program which provides opportunities for highly capable and gifted students. It is tailored to meet the diverse educational needs of students through days of excellence programs. These are offered each term.
- Olympiads: selected 4,5 and 6 students compete in the Olympiad Mathematics Competition as part of our Mathematics Extension Program at Brookfield State School. Students are selected by class teachers based on data and observations. Students attend this program on a weekly basis. This is an annual contest that has been offered by Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads Inc (APSMO) since 1987 and designed specifically for high achieving students.
- STEM Opportunities: providing students with engaging, hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
- ICAS Assessments: offered to students as an opportunity for recognition and challenge in various academic fields.
- Sporting opportunities: Brookfield State School participates in interschool sports as well as district, regional, and state championships. Over the past two years, we have entered teams in all major school championships, including table tennis, touch football, futsal, basketball, cross-country, cross-country relays, and the Brisbane International Tennis Schools Championships. This year, we have six teams participating in the Hounds Touch Football Competition, showcasing our commitment to providing students with competitive sporting opportunities.
- PAT Testing: used to identify students who require additional enrichment and extension.
- Music: Honours Choral Program. Selected Year 6 students with similar students across the region spend 3 days with professional choral conductors to extend choral skills and experience.
- Brookfield State School Instrumental program. A selection process is followed to identify students with musical potential.
At Brookfield State School, we are committed to creating an environment where every student has the opportunity to excel and reach their full potential.
